How Long Should a Massage Be: 60, 90 or 120 Minutes?

In short

A 60-minute massage covers the whole body at a comfortable pace and suits first visits and busy days. A 90-minute massage gives proper time to both upper body and legs and suits tight backs, Kerala oil massage and deep tissue. A 120-minute booking is for packages, such as a Moroccan bath followed by a massage.

Sixty minutes covers the whole body. Ninety gives your back and legs the time they need. One hundred and twenty is an afternoon.

“Sixty or ninety?” It is one of the first questions we ask when someone books, and many guests are not sure. Here is how to decide.

What happens in each length

Length What fits in Best for
60 minutes A complete head-to-toe massage at a comfortable pace First visits, lunch breaks, evenings after work
90 minutes The full body, plus real time on the back, shoulders and legs Tight backs, deep tissue, Kerala oil massage, regular guests
120 minutes Two treatments, or one very unhurried ritual Moroccan bath + massage, special occasions, a true reset

Why 60 minutes works

A 60-minute massage is long enough to work through the whole body properly. Roughly a third goes to the back and shoulders, a quarter to the legs, and the rest to arms, neck, scalp and feet. It is the right choice if:

  • it is your first massage and you are not sure how you will feel
  • you are fitting it into a working day
  • you want a full body or traditional Thai massage at a normal pace

Most of us carry tension in two places: the upper back and shoulders from screens and driving, and the lower back and legs from sitting or exercise. In 60 minutes, a therapist has to choose. In 90 minutes, both get proper time.

Ninety minutes also suits treatments that should not be hurried:

  • Deep tissue needs a gradual warm-up before deeper pressure.
  • Kerala Ayurvedic massage has a slow rhythm and includes the scalp.
  • Thai massage can include a fuller sequence of stretches.

When 120 minutes makes sense

Two hours is less an appointment than an afternoon. It is the length for combinations: a Moroccan bath followed by a massage, or our signature ritual with herbal tea in the lounge. Plan nothing afterwards.

Remember the time around the treatment

The length you book is treatment time. Add:

  • 10 to 15 minutes before for arrival and consultation
  • 5 to 10 minutes after to get up slowly and dress
  • 15 minutes more after oil-rich treatments if you want to shower

So a 60-minute massage is roughly a 90-minute visit.

A simple rule

If you are not sure, book 60 minutes the first time and notice how you feel at the end. If your first thought is “I wish that had been longer,” book 90 next time.

Massages at Olive Spa, 1st Floor, V Hotel Fujairah, start from AED 120 for 60 minutes. See every length on the spa menu, or book online.
