For some of you, this massage is a memory
For some of you, the word Kerala will not need explaining. It might bring back the smell of warm coconut and herbal oil, a grandmother’s hands on your scalp on a Sunday morning, a monsoon afternoon spent doing nothing at all. Living and working in Fujairah, far from home, it can be surprisingly hard to find something that feels like that again.
For others, Kerala massage is a curiosity: you have heard about Ayurveda, perhaps seen photographs of warm oil being poured onto a brass bowl, and wondered what it is actually like.
Either way, you are welcome here. At Olive Spa, inside V Hotel Fujairah, our Kerala Ayurvedic massage is slow, oil-rich and unhurried — closer to a ritual than a quick appointment.
What is Kerala Ayurvedic massage?
Kerala massage is a traditional full body oil massage from the South Indian state of Kerala, rooted in Ayurveda, India’s long-established system of traditional wellbeing practices. The best-known form is Abhyanga, a head-to-toe massage with warm herbal oil.
What makes it different from most other massages:
- Much more oil. The oil is not just a way to help the hands glide. It is central to the experience, and you will feel it.
- Warm oil. The oil is warmed before it is applied, which many guests find instantly calming.
- Long, rhythmic strokes. Movements are flowing and repetitive, often following the direction of the limbs.
- The scalp is included. Traditionally the massage begins or ends with the head, with oil worked through the hair.
- Slower pace. It is a quiet, steady rhythm rather than intense, focused work.
Ayurveda is a wellness tradition, and that is how we present it. We do not diagnose, prescribe or make medical claims. Kerala massage is offered at Olive Spa as a traditional relaxation ritual, and if you are managing a health condition, please speak to your doctor about anything beyond that.
A little about the tradition
Kerala, on India’s south-western coast, is the region most closely associated with Ayurvedic massage. Oil massage there is not only a spa treatment; in many families it has long been part of ordinary life. Children are massaged with oil, hair is oiled before bathing, and the monsoon month of Karkidakam (around July and August) is traditionally seen as a time to slow down and look after the body with oil treatments and rest.
That everyday familiarity shapes the massage itself. It is not meant to be dramatic. It is meant to be steady, generous and comforting, the kind of care that is repeated rather than rushed. Therapists trained in the Kerala style often work with a particular rhythm, sometimes in matching movements on both sides of the body at once.
How Kerala massage differs from an ordinary oil massage
Many spas offer an “oil massage.” Kerala massage is a specific tradition, and a few things set it apart:
- The oil is the treatment, not just a lubricant. It is herbal, warmed and used generously.
- The scalp matters. Head oiling is traditionally part of the ritual, not an optional extra.
- The rhythm is distinctive. Long strokes, often in one direction along the limbs, repeated at a steady pace.
- There is no rush to finish. Time to rest, and to let the oil settle, is part of the experience.
If you have had Ayurvedic massage at home in Kerala, Karnataka or Sri Lanka, you will recognise the feeling. If you have not, expect something slower and more enveloping than a typical spa massage.
The oils we use
The oil shapes this massage more than any other on our menu, so you deserve to know what goes on your skin.
Herbal Ayurvedic oils are often based on sesame or coconut oil infused with herbs. If you have a nut, sesame or coconut allergy, or very sensitive skin, please tell us when you book. We can prepare a lighter or unscented alternative, and your therapist will patch-test if you are unsure.
The Oils We Use
- Sesame oil: the classic base oil, often infused with herbs
- Coconut oil: a light base oil, often used for cooling blends
- Dhanwantharam oil: a herbal oil blend, usually in a sesame base
- Mahanarayan oil: a herbal blend with sesame oil and herbs, often used for body massage
- Ksheerabala oil: a herbal blend with milk, sesame oil and herbs
- Brahmi oil: a herbal oil with brahmi, often used for head massage
- Bhringraj oil: a herbal oil with bhringraj, often used for scalp massage

What to expect: oil, hair and time
A little practical honesty helps here, because Kerala massage is not quite like other treatments.
You will be oily. That is the point. Your therapist will remove excess oil with warm towels at the end, but a light film will remain on your skin.
Your hair will be oiled, unless you say otherwise. If you are heading back to work or to dinner, you may prefer to skip the scalp or ask for a lighter touch there. Just tell us during the consultation.
Leave time to shower. A shower is available after your session. Many guests like to rest for ten minutes first and let the oil settle before washing.
Wear something you don’t mind. Dark, loose clothing is ideal for afterwards, in case any oil remains.
Pressure is gentle to medium. If you would like firmer pressure, ask, but if you want deep, focused work on tight muscles, a deep tissue massage is a better choice.
Indian massage traditions at Olive Spa
If you searched for an Indian massage centre in Fujairah, this is the page for you. Kerala Ayurvedic massage is the heart of our Indian-style treatments, and it is the one most of our South Asian guests ask for by name.
Your therapist warms the oil first, then spreads it over your body with long, steady strokes. You lie on the table, and the massage covers your back, arms and legs.
Whether you call it Kerala massage, Malayali massage, Ayurvedic massage or Abhyanga, you are asking for the same thing: warm oil, steady hands and time.
Kerala, full body or Thai: which suits you today?
Wondering which massage is right for you? Here is how Kerala massage compares with two of our most popular alternatives.
| Compared on | Kerala Ayurvedic massage | Full body massage | Thai massage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oil | Generous, warm, herbal | Moderate | None (Thai oil option available) |
| Pressure | Gentle to medium | Light to medium | Medium, with stretching |
| Rhythm | Long, rhythmic, traditional | Flowing, Swedish-style | Rhythmic presses and stretches |
| Scalp and hair | Usually oiled | Light scalp massage, little oil | Usually no oil |
| Clothing | Undressed under a sheet | Undressed under a sheet | Loose clothing provided |
| Shower after | Recommended | Optional | Not usually needed |
- If you want the full oil ritual and have time to shower, choose Kerala.
- If you want to relax but need to go straight back to the office, a full body massage leaves less oil behind.
- If you would rather stay clothed and be stretched, try Thai massage.
Who usually chooses a Kerala massage?
- Guests from Kerala and across South Asia looking for a familiar tradition in Fujairah.
- Anyone who loves warm oil and the slow, soothing feeling it brings.
- Guests with dry skin after the sun who enjoy how nourished their skin feels afterwards.
- People who find firm massage too much and prefer a gentler, rhythmic touch.
- Visitors curious about Ayurveda who want to experience it in a calm, professional setting.
If you are pregnant, have a skin condition, allergies or a medical condition, please tell us before booking so we can advise you properly.
